In every community, there are people who work tirelessly behind the scenes, driven by a passion to uplift and enhance the place they call home. Grant Dally is one of these local champions dedicated to making Te Puke a better place. This October, Grant was honoured with the Thumbs Up Award for an individual for going above and beyond for our community.
Grant’s journey as a community advocate began when he was spotted painting over graffiti under the TEL underpass. When asked about the graffiti, Grant shared that it was a concern raised by elderly residents during a community forum in Maketu. Despite facing setbacks when initial help fell through due to health issues, Grant persevered. The issue was once again raised at a Creative Te Puke meeting and Faye O’Dwyer also volunteered her help. The two of them then made a time to take action to tidy it up.
His involvement spans across various community organisations, wearing multiple hats as the Secretary for Te Awa Kahikatea Pathway, a member of Creative Te Puke Forum, and a dedicated contributor to the Te Puke War Memorial Hall. Grant’s commitment doesn’t end there—previously he has served as a caretaker and cleaner for the War Memorial Hall, he contributes his time to the annual Seeka Te Puke Christmas Float Parade, and even brightened up the town entrance by painting the Kiwifruit Shoots sculptures.
Grant’s recent endeavour, in collaboration with the Te Awa Kahikatea Pathway Society, showcases his innovative spirit. A project featuring life-sized cattle and a horse painting by local artists is set to be installed on Stock Road, paying homage to the town’s history. Additionally, his involvement in creating storyboards to celebrate Te Puke’s heritage further highlights his dedication to preserving the town’s rich history.
For Grant, the motivation behind his tireless efforts is simple. He believes that every small step towards improving the town contributes to making it a better place to live. Reflecting on his childhood memories in Waiuku and his experiences in various small towns, Grant is fuelled by a desire to elevate Te Puke, hoping to inspire others along the way.
Keep up the incredible work, Grant! You’re truly making a difference—one brushstroke at a time.
